Music has changed rapidly over the course of the last few hundred years. While we know the type of music available today, it is totally the polar opposite to what was around a few hundred years ago. The changes seen in music might not seem much to some now but if you take a simple look back over the last few decades, you will see how much it has influenced people. The evolution of music is truly a unique part of history.
To be honest, music has been around forever but the way we interpret it today is different from the early 1200s all the way up to the early 1900s. In most cases, people experienced music through instruments and there were very few singers who sang as they do today. Even in the early 1900s, singers were not always used on music as most people sat and enjoyed the soothing sounds of instruments. Music in those days were certainly nothing compared to today but that doesn’t mean to say music from those times weren’t as good as today’s styles.
20’s Swing and Jazz
When the 1920s rolled around, big bands were the rage and that brought about the creation of something we call swing. A big hit in America, this form of music slowly but surely made its way around the world and while many might say today, it wasn’t really the most exciting time for music, it certainly played it’s part in history. The 1920s and 1930s especially was a particular special decade for music and it still has an influence today as well.
Rock of the ’50s
The post-war years were certainly unusual years for music with the introduction of rock and roll. With that, came one very special man—Elvis Presley. Now, everyone knows Elvis Presley even though he is no longer around and many listeners today have only heard re-runs of his songs and yet he is considered the face of rock of roll of the era. It’s strange but his music and influence has changed the face of music forever and even though there were many big stars of that era in the ’50s and ’60s, he is probably the most recognisable face.
While motown isn’t really considered to be a modern music experience, it was one of the biggest musical sensations and impacted the way we all listened to music. It’s like the eighties as well when ballads were more sung and then of course, the rap decades. The explosion of boy bands and girl bands were unstoppable and with rap on the way, it shaped the ’90s considerably. However, today, there is a true mash-up of music as rap and hip-hop is very much popular but so too are heavy metal and even classical is making a comeback. You have a mix of music which has all been influenced from previous years.
Music will Continue Changing
What is important to remember is that while the music we know today is exciting and fresh, it will soon be history! Music is constantly changing and while we absolutely adore what we listen to now, it will change as times change. There will be new music styles and craze’s that entice us to try something different and it’s actually a really good thing. It’s time to learn more about music and see where it takes us.
